Going in depth behind the numbers can help everyone better understand why Primavera Online is Arizona’s school of choice for students who are falling behind, want to get ahead or don’t fit the traditional school mold.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_5″ layout=”2_5″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

AzMERIT Scores

Primavera’s AzMERIT scores are continually improving and far exceed those of other Arizona alternative schools. This is especially notable because 70% or more of our full-time students are considered alternative and enroll with us already at high risk of not graduating. Another important factor is that 1 out of every 5 Primavera students are between 18 and 21, work full time, are working mothers and fathers, or are the principle breadwinners for their families. We care deeply about giving these young adults every opportunity to graduate with a diploma and work hard to give them the flexibility, access and tools they need to succeed.

Primavera also tests more kids than any other alternative school in the state. And that matters, because as an alternative school, testing more at-risk kids will of course have an impact on overall outcomes.

Despite these inherent challenges, Primavera Online comes out on top, especially when compared against our peers at other large alternative schools. Our passing scores are higher than our peers by 13% in Math and 20% in English. For the past three years, Primavera’s improvement has outpaced the state’s improvement by increasing 7% in ELA and 10% in Math.

What’s more, against all 155 alternative schools both large and small, we were 6th in ELA and 13th in Math. These numbers tell the truth of our school and we’re immensely proud of our students and our employees for our success.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” hundred_percent_height=”no” hundred_percent_height_scroll=”no” hundred_percent_height_center_content=”yes” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” status=”published” publish_date=”” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”center center” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” admin_toggled=”no”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

We know that teachers are the lifeblood of any school. Our executive team supports our teachers and the ongoing development and refinement of our curriculum. We also pay our teachers and support staff 6% higher than the state average in order to be competitive and attract highly qualified, highly certified teachers everyday.

This is important, as we are committed to attracting and retaining the best and brightest teachers, curriculum experts and developers in the field. We do that by paying above market wages and supporting a robust, thriving workforce environment.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

Class Size

[/fusion_text][fusion_text columns=”1″ column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

Our average class size last year was 33 students per class. This number reflects the reality of how modern classrooms work in a digital environment.

Here’s how we calculate that figure. Primavera has what we call a rolling block model for classes. This is very different than traditional brick-and-mortar schools because new courses start every two weeks. This model allows a student to finish a course and their enrollment at Primavera within six weeks. To calculate class size, we averaged the number of students enrolled in each of the more than 3,500 course sections offered at Primavera last year.

Keep in mind that student enrollment numbers in our digital model vary widely by course, subject, month and grade level. For instance, an academic orientation or career exploration course tends to have the most students, whereas a course like 7th grade Spanish might only have one student enrolled based on demand, need or enrollment period. Such a unique teacher-student experience is all but impossible in a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Our courses also have fewer students at the beginning of the year compared to the end of the year, and high school enrollment typically peaks in summer. In fact, enrollment in July is more than twice the number of students enrolled at the start of the school year in August.

In other words, Primavera Online is built for the modern digital era and serves the digital natives of today. This unique service model cannot and simply should not be compared to a traditional educational model designed in the 19th century to prepare students living in the Industrial Age. Unlike that system, the number of teachers, students and courses at Primavera flexes greatly throughout a year to give students and parents unparalleled choice. Despite being on the forefront of a new age in digital education and thus so very different from most other schools, our success is a tribute to the teachers and staff who go to great lengths to ensure continuity and quality in our education.

Less than 16% of students dropped out of Primavera last year despite highly erratic rates reported elsewhere.

Higher rates are based on errors made when all schools transitioned to the state’s new data system in 2015. During that transition errors were made when reporting some dropout figures. For important context, before the new system took effect, Primavera’s dropout rate was less than 1% in 2014. It increased to 16% in 2015, though even that remains a high-performing average when measured against other alternative schools serving at-risk kids. Our team is actively working with the ADE to correct the clerical errors made after the transition to AzEDS and will release those corrected rates when that review is finalized. We expect the state’s calculation to reflect the actual percentage of students that dropped out of Primavera last year – less than 16% – once reporting errors are corrected.

While these numbers and their context tell the story of what happens every day at Primavera, what we can’t accurately measure is the impact our school makes in the lives of thousands of Arizona kids each year. We are proud of our teachers, our school and our unique technology and consider it a great service to our students, their families and the state.
